Like history? Arctic exploration? Mary Shelley? White male hubris? CANNIBALISM? Okay, maybe not those last two. But all are treated in my piece, “The Madness of the White Lands,” forthcoming in the April 30 issue of Hellhound MagazineThis epistolary short follows a fictional physician on the very real Arctic voyage of Scottish explorer John Rae. In the late 1800s, Rae was one of the British explorers seeking a “North-West passage” through the Arctic. He wrote extensively of his encounters with the Inuit people of what was then called Boothia Felix, who relayed to him grisly stories of the fate of Sir John Franklin and his ships, Erebus and Terror, which were lost with all their crew.
